Nacido en Matanzas, Cuba, el 11 de Diciembre de 1970. Egresado del Instituto Superior de Arte, La

Habana, Cuba en 1994. Su obra ha sido expuesta en Gasworks Gallery, Londres; Liebman Magnan

Gallery, Nueva York; Whitechapel Art Gallery, Londres; Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de la

Habana, Cuba; Exit Art, Nueva York; Museo de Bellas Artes de Montreal, Canadá; Museo de Arte

Lowe, Universidad de Miami, Florida; Museo de Bellas Artes de Houston; Walker Art Center,

Minniapolis; Estudio Figueroa-Vives, La Habana; Estudio Nave Oporto, Madrid, entre otros.

Mi obra se ha desarrollado por más de 30 años en medio de la dualidad existente entre: ficción y

realidad, lo privado y lo público, lo individual y lo colectivo, lo local y lo universal…

Para ello creé en 1991 a Francisco de la Cal, personaje de ficción, campesino (carbonero de la

Ciénaga de Zapata) que quedó ciego siendo joven a principios de los años sesenta. De la Cal es

según mi narrativa, un artista naif. Desde entonces firmamos las obras conjuntamente Fernando

Rguez./Francisco de la Cal.

Ambos, pertenecemos a generaciones diferentes, con maneras de hacer y pensar también

diferentes. Hemos reflexionado sobre los conflictos relacionados con los individuos y sus

circunstancias: sociedades simples o complejas, rurales o urbanas, tradicionales o modernas,

capitalistas o socialista, globales o no. Así surgieron las series “De una experiencia colectiva” (1998),

“Puramente formal” (1999), “Tiempos modernos” (2006), “Reflexiones visuales” y la más reciente

“Work IN paper” . Hemos usado siempre diferentes medios, desde la pintura, la escultura, la

instalación “pretendidamente” naif hasta las nuevas tecnologías a nuestro alcance.

Fernando Rodríguez Falcón

Born in Matanzas, Cuba, on December 11, 1970. He graduated from the Instituto Superior de Arte

in Havana, Cuba, in 1994. His work has been exhibited at Gasworks Gallery, London; Liebman

Magnan Gallery, New York; Whitechapel Art Gallery, London; the National Museum of Fine Arts of

Havana, Cuba; Exit Art, New York; the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Canada; the Lowe Art Museum,

University of Miami, Florida; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis;

Estudio Figueroa-Vives, Havana; Estudio Nave Oporto, Madrid, among others. My work has

developed over more than 30 years amid the existing dualities between fiction and reality, the

private and the public, the individual and the collective, the local and the universal. To explore

these ideas, in 1991 I created Francisco de la Cal, a fictional character: a peasant (a charcoal burner

from the Zapata Swamp) who became blind while still young in the early 1960s. According to

my narrative, De la Cal is a naïve artist. Since then, we have signed the works jointly as Fernando

Rguez. / Francisco de la Cal.

Both of us belong to different generations, with different ways of making and thinking. Together

we have reflected on conflicts related to individuals and their circumstances: simple or complex

societies, rural or urban contexts, traditional or modern systems, capitalist or socialist frameworks,

global or otherwise. From this collaboration emerged the series From a Collective Experience

(1998), Purely Formal (1999), Modern Times (2006), Visual Reflections, and the most recent Work

in Paper. We have consistently used different media, ranging from painting, sculpture, and “supposedly”

naïve installations to the new technologies available to us.
