Study No. 3 For The Mountains (Estudio No. 3 Para El Monte)
This work of geometric and natural elements in blues, grays and black speaks to the parallels between the man-made and the natural worlds. Diago's work draws on elements of his Afro-Cuban religion, in which people are seen as closely bound to the woodlands which are their cultural roots. Here, he has cut squares of canvas and glued them to the surface beneath the paint, representing the diaspora of people of African descent cause by the slave trade. The painting juxtaposes these references with shapes connoting urban life, a recognition that urban and rural must co-exist.
